SportHouse launches sales and marketing suite in preparation for site opening

Once opened, SportHouse will be used by elite athletes from handball, futsal, rowing and athletics, and competitors from judo and wheelchair rugby. The site will support a wider sporting legacy by providing permanent training facilities for elite performing teams and talented young athletes, alongside the local community, after the completion of international competitions.

Situated in a prime location within Barking train station and less than three miles from SportHouse, the sales and marketing suite will act as a showcase for the facilities and will remain open throughout the summer when SportHouse closes for elite athlete use before reopening to the public in September.

Included in the 1000m2 gym facilities at the site will be over 75 pieces from CYBEX’s cardiovascular range. This will comprise of 751T treadmills, 750C upright cycles, 750R recumbent cycles and both lower and total body Arc Trainers, one of which will also be featured at the sales and marketing suite.

SportHouse will also feature equipment from CYBEX’s Total Access range, which has been developed in accordance with the Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) programme.

A full range of CYBEX strength training equipment will also be installed. This extensive list of equipment includes ten Big Iron half racks and lifting platforms, eight Bravo functional trainers, six plate loaded stations and 17 free weight stations.  Over 35 pieces of strength equipment will also be installed from CYBEX’s Eagle, VR1 and VR3 ranges.

Sport and leisure industry consultancy firm HBA was appointed as part of the leisure sector consultancy team and has acted as the advisory body on various aspects central to the delivery of the SportHouse project. Commenting on the opening of the suite, director Mark Harrop said: “The opening of the sales and marketing suite will provide the foundation for engaging with the local community, as we focus on promoting SportHouse as a world class sport and fitness facility that is both affordable and accessible to everyone.

   “By working with CYBEX, we have been able to provide fitness equipment that not only meets the demands and requirements of the elite athletes, but also caters to all aspects of the community”.

The opening of the sales and marketing suite signals the initial phase in activating the venue’s strategy for creating a long term sporting legacy, as Rob Thurston, commercial director for CYBEX International UK, explains: “The versatility of SportHouse will ensure that users of all ages, abilities and sporting interests will benefit from the facilities for years to come. By equipping the gyms with an entire range of CYBEX cardio, strength and Total Access equipment, CYBEX can use SportHouse as a ‘showcase’ site, where new and existing clients can visit the facilities and see the diverse range of users and training requirements that CYBEX caters for”.

SportHouse will also become the UK home for the CYBEX Institute for Exercise Science, where it will run 10 REPS accredited training seminars per year.

Remember this time last year, when you promised yourself that 2011 was THE year?
It was the year of the new, fit you — you know, the one who went to the gym straight after work, chugged a gallon of water a day and rocked CrossFit six days a week. Remember that?

Of course, that dream died shortly afterward, when you realized you never really knew what time you would leave work, the water jug was never going to fill itself and CrossFit was kind of pricey. And hard.

Oh, wait. That wasn’t you at all. That was us.

But if you’re anything like us, you probably have your own reasons for wanting to get in shape, and not doing it. Especially now, when medical bills, even with insurance, are outrageous, and quality of life is more precious than almost anything else in these strange times.

Whatever our — or your — reasons are for not doing what you know you should do, they’re just excuses, said Chris Knodel, a Sanford fitness coach and former soldier with way too many fitness accomplishments to list.

Knodel also acts as a fitness consultant for FitOrbit and owns and operates Irish Goat Multisport, a company that designs and administers multi-sport training programs for all ages and fitness levels.

“You never need a gym,” said Knodel, who is the “Irish Goat” in Irish Goat Multisport. “Everything you need is in your home.”

We’ve decided to accept his advice and attempt to further our fitness routine by using what we already have: fitness DVDs and links to streaming fitness videos; running shoes; and our own living rooms.

In this occasional series, we will share what we’ve learned by trying different at-home techniques, whether it’s through tips from trainers, workouts from a fitness DVD or a streaming fitness show on Netflix or Hulu.

We’re hoping to find anything we can do in our own homes that helps us in our goals to keep the doctors away as much as possible.

We also plan to recommend some workouts or DVDs that might be right for you and your fitness level.

But before we get going, here are some of Knodel’s all-around fitness tips to get us started.

Tips from Chris Knodel
1. Start slowly when making lifestyle changes. First, change portions and diet. Then increase exercise. Then, focus on something else. The key is not to overwhelm the system with so much deprivation that it causes a complete mental collapse. If you do, you’ll lapse back into the old habits twice as badly as before.

2. Keep a food journal. The body is a balance sheet. Eat more than you need, and you’ll put on weight. Eat too little, and your body will convert everything to fat stores because it fears starvation.

3. Soda intervention. If you won’t put down the full-octane soda, don’t even try to lose weight. Find a diet drink alternative. You may want to switch brands.

4. Change up your times, days and activities. Run, bike, swim and cross-train. Don’t fall into a standard routine. Change will confuse the body into making changes.

5. Focus on intensity, not duration. It’s better to give it all you’ve got for 20 minutes, twice a day, than three hours straight at a moderate energy level.

PUTTING IT TO THE TEST
What I tried: “Crunch: Boot Camp Training” (2004)
What it is: A 30-minute, high-intensity cardio and strength-training work out. I was able to stream it through Netflix. You need a Netflix account and a computer or Internet-accessible TV set.

Fitness level needed: Couch potatoes and fitness buffs alike can get plenty of use out of this workout. But you should talk to your doctor before starting any fitness routine.

What you need to proceed: Hand weights, or if you don’t have those, try some cans of beans or other canned foods for resistance. A mat isn’t a necessity, but you will be on your knees and back some, so you might want to use a mat if the surface of your floor is hard.

My thoughts: Within the first few minutes of this workout, I was breathing hard and sweating. The instructor, Susan Hitzman, throws her class directly into a heart-pumping workout, interspersed with some pretty challenging strength-training moves.

For me, the best part was knowing it only lasted 30 minutes. I’m one of those people who loves completing a work out, but I don’t necessarily enjoy getting started. The 30-minute time frame mentally won me over.

The video starts out with some stationary marching, which is a little tougher than it looks. She moves pretty flawlessly into squats, with hand weights for resistance, and arm presses. The workout does a pretty good job of targeting several muscle groups, including arms, back, legs and abdominal.

Hitzman uses plenty of at-home exercises that don’t require a gym. Think pushups, squats, jumping jacks and sit-ups. She also does a good job of teaching form without breaking the stride of the workout. I was also pleasantly surprised to hear grunts and exhausted laughter from the beautiful, smiling shiny people working out behind her. Truth be told, I had to stop a couple times when I thought I couldn’t go on. But after a few seconds rest, I found I could, and it was easy to jump right back in. I have no problem admitting I collapsed on my stomach at one time while doing pushups. OK, maybe three times.

Overall impressions from a lazy person: I really liked this workout. The rooms in my house are pretty small, but I only needed about 6 feet of space at any given time. Also, there was no equipment I had to drag into my living room, which might have mentally psyched me out of doing the workout. (I will use any excuse not to work out, and moving equipment into a room is just enough to do the trick.)

The beat of the music was a good, steady, heart-pumping sound, too. But the very best part for me was that it only took 30minutes. In that time, however, I know I got a pretty good workout. I’ll definitely do this one again.

Airman begins career sharing strong motivation and fitness message

2/6/2012 - BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan – If you walk into a gym on any given day, some people will be working out with partners and others will be following instruction within a group. Team motivation and shared experiences are major factors in helping an Airman achieve his individual physical fitness goals. One Airman embraced that concept and brought the motivation that made him a fitness leader at his home station to Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan.

Senior Airman Nicholas Gooden, 455th Expeditionary Logistics Readiness Squadron vehicle maintainer, is a spin class instructor at Bagram. He is deployed from Aviano Air Base, Italy, where he is a physical training leader and a certified physical trainer.

“It all started with wanting to help people,” Gooden said.

A first-term Airman, Gooden adopted an early routine which started him hitting the gym at his base in a personal pursuit to raise his fitness level. Day after day, he worked on his overall strength and endurance.

At Aviano, one of Gooden’s friends approached him to become a workout partner in hopes of improving his physical training score. What his friend didn’t know was that he gave Gooden a reason to begin a progressive chain of service that would be an outlet for Gooden’s desire to help others.

While helping his friend, Gooden decided to expand his knowledge and became a physical training leader. While leading his unit to its fitness goals as a PTL, he decided to expand his sphere of influence by becoming a certified personal trainer. While being a personal trainer for his base, he started taking spin classes. Feeding a strong desire to share the benefits of spin class, Gooden became a certified spin class instructor.

Now, Gooden is deployed to Bagram. Although it is his first deployment, it only served to bring more passion to his outlook on fitness.

“From seeing people who come back to home station from deployment, I noticed a lot of them lost weight or pushed themselves to the gym more,” Gooden said. “They knew they needed to be fit to fight. Fit to do the mission.

“Now that I am deployed, I see that a lot of us don’t have a strict PT schedule that we are directed to uphold, like when we are at home station. So, by offering a variety of stuff that people want to get involved with, you are able to step out there and help get Airmen’s motivation up…get them involved.

And that is just what Gooden decided to do.

Upon his arrival to Bagram, Gooden immediately contacted the base gym and asked if they had spin classes available. When he heard there were no classes or equipment, Gooden volunteered to teach classes and worked with the 455th Expeditionary Force Support Squadron to bring the time, space and equipment to The Rock Fitness Center at Bagram.

The 455th EFSS coordinated to get spin class equipment from a gym in theatre that was closing down. The classes were set up and immediately filled by Bagram deployers.

A 455th EFSS spokesperson said Gooden’s classes grew so popular, so fast, that they are working to get more bikes and offer the class more days a week.

Even going from 10 bikes to 15 bikes, and increasing to four instructors, they are still turning away spin students. Behind Gooden’s motivating leadership, his spin sessions have helped deployers move toward their fitness goals.

“It drastically improved my run time,” Staff Sgt. Dustin Withrow, spin class student of two weeks, said. “The first time I ran at Bagram it was harder to breath with the elevation…not any more. Spin makes for a great addition to your current cardio workout.”

Army First Sgt. Alicia Newton, spin class student since its inauguration, said the classes have greatly benefitted her.

“Spin class has improved my muscle strength, endurance and cardio fitness,” she said. “There are a variety of exercises which other people are doing with you. You have competition to motivate you and push yourself harder.”

Gooden’s influence goes beyond promoting physical fitness. The mental health aspects of Comprehensive Airman Fitness are also a resource he wants to share with Bagram deployers.

“Since I have been teaching the class, I start seeing the same faces,” he said. “They now have the class as part of their routine.”

It doesn’t take multiple deployments to figure out the importance of having a deployed routine.

“A Monday today is a Monday tomorrow,” Gooden said. “Then it starts again until you have Mondays all week. To break it up, you have to allow for different options. It seems to help relieve stress. By relieving stress, you are allowing them to do the mission to a higher standard because they feel less tension. They have an avenue to relieve stress which improves their physical and mental health.”

His continual work with the 455th EFSS was recently recognized during one of his spin classes.

“On behalf of the 455th EFSS, we want to say thank you for your support,” Lt. Col. Thomas Forrester, 455th EFSS commander, said while coining Gooden for his outstanding efforts and dedication to fitness.

Although he is still early in his enlistment, Gooden continues to seek ways to help Airmen achieve their goals.

Following his deployment, he is going back to Aviano for a few months before changing stations to Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. There he will begin his tour as a military training instructor.

“I am excited about that,” he said. “I always loved leading. I think leading from the ground up will enable me to help Airmen even more.”

Spin classes are available on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8 p.m. in the Rock Fitness Center on Bagram.
