get fit and healthy in the New Year.

December is a month of indulgences. We stuff ourselves silly with roast turkey dinners, left-over turkey sandwiches, mince pies, Christmas cake, Christmas pudding, chocolate and an array of alcoholic beverages. In light of all these calorific treats, its hardly surprising that the majority of the nation vow to go on a diet and get fit and healthy in the New Year.

January is the month where gym membership subscriptions soar, people leave their houses to jog or cycle, enrol in team sports or just get a little more active in general. It is also the month where the sales of sports equipment also rises from home-gym equipment to new trainers. But often overlooked when people tog themselves up with Lycra shorts, moisture wicking t-shirts and air-sprung trainers is the fact that their underwear may be doing nothing to keep their private parts healthy and protected. This is where the need for sports underwear comes in.

A number of designer mens underwear brands have launched lines of specialist sports underwear. Among them is infamous mens underwear brand Calvin Klein who offer a range of underwear which is designed to support you. Their Pro Stretch collection for example, is made from light, breathable microfiber which quickly dries to keep you comfortable while you exercise.

Famous sports brand Nike has a number of sports specific mens underwear ranges available too. Amongst them is the Compression Active Shorts which have been designed to hold everything in place during exercise whilst using Dri-FIT fabric technology to absorb moisture.

The 5 Best Pieces of Fitness Equipment to Have at Home

When you walk into a big time fitness facility, there is a ton of glitz and glamour; variable resistance machines (i.e. Nautilus), treadmills, ellipticals, bikes, free weights, etc. For the average person who walks into a facility for the first time, these things can be extremely confusing and overwhelming. Questions that I commonly get asked as a personal trainer can range from, “How many of these machines should I use?” to“ How do you turn on the treadmill?” These are legitimate questions and concerns for someone who doesn’t know what to do at the gym.

So say you don’t like to be overwhelmed by all of the equipment in the gym or the huge morning and evening crowds. The question you should be asking is, “What should I have at my own home to improve my quality of life”? There are a few things that everyone should have even if you do workout at a health club, but can’t always get in due a busy work schedule, kids or overall time constraints. Here is a list of my Top 5 pieces of at home fitness equipment that is best for you!

1. What you need to know is that the best piece of fitness equipment is… YOURSELF!

There are hundreds of body weight exercises that you can do from the comfort of your own home without any fancy piece of fitness equipment. Not only are they functional but can be done in a variety of different ways and everywhere. Here are a few sample exercises:

  • Body weight squats
  • Push ups
  • Front Plank
  • Walking lunge
  • Body Weight Split Squats

2. A set of adjustable dumbbells are a must (i.e. Bowflex Select Tech or PowerBlock Elites). The weight that you choose should be relative to your strength levels, yet challenging enough to adhere to your fitness goals. Your body is an extremely adaptable machine; if you consistently do the same routine you will no longer get much physiological benefit out of it (GAS). Adding resistance to your once body weight exercises will further increase the gains in strength you have made. Several sets of dumbbells are also a great alternative, but can take up much space and become pricier in the long run. These adjustable dumbbells can range from $100 to $700. Here are a few sample dumbbell exercises:

Here is an Image of the PowerBlock!

  • Goblet Squats
  • Floor Press
  • Seated Dumbell Russian Twists
  • Dumbell Walking Lunges
  • Standing Dumbbell Overhead Press

    3. The Kettlebell is one of the most functional pieces of fitness equipment out there! Since the center of mass is extended beyond the hand, this facilitates swinging movements. Done properly, Kettlebell exercises can engage your entire CORE building strength and endurance. Yet, learning how to use them properly is the difficulty. Always consult a professional when learning new exercises. Prices vary depending on the weight of the Kettlebell you buy, but you’re looking to spend between $20 and $180 per Kettlebell. Here are a few sample exercises:

You can find an Image of a Kettlebell here!

    • Kettlebell Swing
    • Kettlebell Snatch
    • Kettlebell Clean and Jerk
    • Kettlebell Turkish Get-Up
    • Kettlebell Sumo Deadlift High Pull

    4. The TRX Suspension Trainer is one of the most complete pieces of fitness equipment that I’ve come across. With over 150 different exercises, this piece of equipment can give you a full body workout without adding in a single other piece of training equipment. Designed by a Navy Seal, the TRX Suspension Trainer got more recognition in the Sport Conditioning realm but is a great buy for everyone. Easy to set up; the TRX comes with a training video and instructions on the how to use it. This can range from $150 to $200+ depending on the package you buy. And did I mention that it’s extremely portable for those travel workouts? Here are a few of my favorite TRX exercises:

You can find the TRX Suspension Trainer here!

    • TRX inverted row
    • TRX Chest Press
    • TRX Suspended Lunge
    • TRX Suspended Plank
    • TRX Pistol Squat

      5. The final piece to your home gym is one of the best if not the best piece of aerobic equipment. And no, it’s not a treadmill or an elliptical but a Rowing Ergometer! A Rowing Ergometer or “Erg” for short, resembles Watercraft Rowing; a low impact cardiovascular option that is safe on the joints and connective tissue. Proper form is crucial with this piece of equipment because low back injury is the most common injury when using the Rowing Ergometer. In addition to being low impact, this piece of equipment is a great weight loss option, which is a byproduct of the high fitness levels attained from its use. Prices can range from $150 to $1300. Another benefit to the Erg is its compact size and light weight frame.

You can find the Concept2 Rowing Ergometer here!

If you are thinking of developing a home gym, these pieces of equipment are a fantastic place to start! As always, please advise a professional on how to use equipment that you are unfamiliar with. The next question I ask you is how can these things impact your fitness goals? Send me your questions and comments, as I will be glad to answer!

–>

In the end, it was all much ado about nothing.

Taunton High’s Joseph Rabouin Field House played the friendly host to the displaced King Philip Regional High boys’ basketball Warriors, who put a lickin’ on Whitman-Hanson in front of a lot more people than the little KP gym could hold, and everyone wearing green and gold went home happy.

Make no mistake, there were a lot more green-and-golds in the field house than the “visiting” red-and-blacks who actually had a shorter ride to Tuesday night’s game.

“It was a sea of green and gold behind us,” KP coach Sean McInnis said after the 83-68 win that sent the Warriors to Thursday’s Division 2-South quartertfinal at Attleboro High against Hopkinton. “The people behind us really did a great job of supporting us.”

Still, it was a little sad that the MIAA, apparently peppered by complaints from somewhere to the east of the Attleboro area and to the west of the Atlantic Ocean, buckled under and took Jake Layman and his teammates out of their home gym Tuesday without them knowing they had already played their last home game of the year.

The complaints said that KP’s gym was too small for the crowd that was anticipated to attend. Yeah, they were probably right. But given how long it has taken for that to be a concern at King Philip, it would have been nice if the Warriors’ fans could have arrived en masse three hours before the game and shut the suspected complainers out of their own house.

Built with the rest of the original KP High in the late 1950s, the gym was one of the few parts of the original school to survive the recent renovation with little more than some alterations to the entrances, updating of the stands to meet the Americans With Disabilities Act standards, and a few coats of paint. It may look a little different, but it’s the same gym in which Rich Lunn played, and the Cataldo brothers, as well as Joey Johnson, Patti Barry, Kara O’Neil and Patty Cronin.

KP was part of the local school building boom of the middle of the 20th century that saw new schools and gyms spring up in Mansfield (now the Qualters Middle School), Foxboro (now the Ahern School), Easton and Franklin (also now middle schools). KP’s gym was every bit the equal of all of them.

Over the years, however, the towns’ academic and athletic needs have changed. Of the nine Hockomock League member schools that greeted the 1969-70 athletic year, only three – KP, Stoughton and Sharon – still play basketball in the same gymnasiums (as well as Attleboro, which was in the Bristol County League at the time). Oliver Ames is actually playing in its second new gymnasium over that 42-year span, and Franklin voters will be looking to replace the cavernous Woodrow Abbott Field House with a more compact gym (ironically, the same basic floor plan as Whitman-Hanson) if they approve a new high school in the months to come.

For the most part, the small gym served KP’s needs – at least for basketball. Other reasons drove the construction of a large field house at the south end of the school building, which had an all-purpose rubberized floor. Budgetary constraints at the time forced construction to proceed without provisions for playing varsity basketball games in the field house, and so it remained even after the 2007 renovation of the school.

After all, who could have foreseen the dizzying revival of KP boys’ basketball?

The best analogy I can find is in meteorology. Weather forecasters refer to “100-year storms” and “50-year storms” as events that are so spectacular and unusual, the odds are they won’t be experienced once in those lengthy periods of time.

Jake Layman is KP’s 50-year storm. There hasn’t been a player like him in the history of the school, and there’s not likely to be another one for probably as many years to come. No one in his right mind could have expected to see fans lined up outside the KP gym for hours last year, awaiting the Warriors’ first home MIAA Tournament game in ages – so many, they opened the auditorium and showed a closed-circuit television broadcast of the game against Walpole on a huge projection screen.

There have been big crowds before in the history of the school; O’Neil drew a few more fans to the games as she scored 1,883 career points, but there’s really been nothing like the Jake Layman Phenomenon. McInnis has tried his best to build a foundation for the future of the program by reaching out to the youth leagues, and that should help keep interest in KP basketball high. But history also indicates that things will settle down pretty soon after Layman departs for the University of Maryland.

And that’s why I had to chuckle when I read a post in one of those high school chat rooms that not only supported the move of the KP tournament game to Taunton, it basically said that KP should be banned from the tournament in general for not providing a glistening new arena for all the people that supposedly wanted to see Jake Layman play.

The poster also readily admitted he didn’t know King Philip from Prince Macaroni, and had no idea of the towns that make up the district, the league in which KP plays or the historical background that has brought us to this point in time. But it was his right as an American to have an opinion, no matter how stupid or ill-informed it might have been.

The identity of those who forced the move of Tuesday’s game will probably remain an official “mystery” for some time (although it’s not hard to guess). Still, the problem would not have been the visiting team’s fans.

In fact, Tuesday night was a generally weak showing for the Whitman-Hanson faithful, who constituted maybe only about a quarter of the crowd that maybe filled three-quarters of Taunton’s seating capacity, and could muster only one disorganized “O-ver-ra-ted!” chant when Layman clanged a would-be dunk off the back of the rim in the third quarter.

KP’s fans made Taunton High “KP South” for a night, just as McInnis hoped they would.

“It felt pretty good,” said junior Sam McDonald, who hit two key three-pointers in the fourth quarter to start the Warriors’ strong finishing kick. “It was a really nice gym … it kinda stunk that we couldn’t play in our home gym, but that was it. It happened and we had to move on from there.”

Mission accomplished.

Saudi women push for the right to play sports

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (Reuters) – The image of 24-year-old Nour Fitiany resting courtside as the pounding of basketballs and thumping of feet reverberated around her wouldn’t merit a second glance in most countries.

But in Saudi Arabia, where girls are banned from sports in state schools, powerful clerics castigate women for exercising and female gyms must adhere to strict regulations, Fitiany’s ambition to play basketball – let alone represent her country in international tournaments – is a bold political statement.

“I hope that when they see that there are girls who really want to play, and who do play regardless of the obstacles that lie in their path, they realise that they have to do something,” she said, dressed in a baby blue t-shirt and grey jogging pants, spinning a basketball on her index finger.

Female participation in sports has long been a controversial issue in the conservative Islamic kingdom, which on February 15 was lambasted by Human Rights Watch for never having sent a woman athlete to the Olympics.

The stance of the official Supreme Council of Religious Scholars is represented by Sheikh Abdullah al-Maneea, who said in 2009 that the excessive “movement and jumping” needed in football and basketball might cause girls to tear their hymens and lose their virginity.

After King Abdullah moved last year to bring women into the country’s political process, however, there have been some signs authorities may allow sportswomen to compete internationally and make it easier for girls to exercise.

The HRW report said the National Olympic committee had “indicated” it would not stop women athletes taking part in the Games if they were invited, and speculation has been rife that the government will send equestrian Dalma Malhas to compete in this years Olympics in London.

The Saudi Arabian General Investment Authority told Reuters earlier this year there are plans to introduce after-hours physical education classes for both girls and boys.

The kingdom’s official sporting body, the Saudi General Presidency of Youth Welfare, did not respond to Reuters questions on the issue.

JUST FOR MALES

Sports in the patriarchal society of Saudi Arabia has long been reserved as an activity for men. Even stadiums for watching sports prohibit females to be present.

Women are able to play in the privacy of their homes or in private schools but as soon as they step beyond that to play professionally or in organized teams in public competitions they are publicly slammed for going against their natural role.

Newspaper articles that refer to such women as “shameless” when they play sports are a cause of great embarrassment for the women and their families. Some have even received text messages advising them to stay at home and tend to their household duties as mothers and wives.

“If there is no support from the family we can not get into these types of activities … some people are extremist or extra conservative,” said Hadeer Sadagah, 17, who plays with Fitiany on their basketball team, Jeddah United.

Jeddah United was set up in 2003 to promote women’s fitness; Malhas, who specialises in show jumping, trained privately and has competed in international tournaments since she was young.

A group of Saudi women is also planning a hiking expedition to Everest base camp this summer as part of a charity fundraising exercise to promote a healthy lifestyle for breast cancer patients.

Billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, a nephew of the king who is known to be a supporter of women’s rights, has included women in his Kingdom Equestrian Team, part of his company Kingdom Holding, which has allowed Saudi women to compete in international competitions since 2007.

Liberal Saudis consider women who participate in sports to be pioneers and encourage the women to play regardless of the obstacles.

“We have a very famous Arabic saying that goes, ‘a healthy brain needs a healthy body’ so from that I believe that people who are against women’s sports are actually against women,” Jeddah resident Hashim Larry, 27, told Reuters.

“They come from the same group of ‘don’t allow women to work and drive’.”

OVERWHELMING PRESSURE

The pressure against women in sports is intense and comes from senior figures in a clerical establishment that is closely allied to the ruling al-Saud family.

In 2010 Sheikh Abdulkareem al-Khudair, who also sits on the Supreme Council for Religious Scholars, renewed a religious edict banning sports for women, which he said “will lead to following in the footsteps of the devil.”

He said it is not permitted to request that the government introduce sports in schools for girls because such activity is forbidden in Islam. Such comments from a high ranking cleric have immense influence in the monarchy, which rules in alliance with the conservative clerics.

When Jeddah United returned from a tournament in which they played the Jordanian national team, in 2009, a local newspaper published their photograph under the headline: “Shameless girls.”

The religious pressure is so great that even female gyms have to wear a non-sporting fig leaf, masquerading as “health centres” that are regulated not by a national sports body but by the Health Ministry.

Fees are so high, at a minimum of 1,000 riyals ($266) a month, that only the affluent can afford membership.

In 2009 a clampdown on unlicensed female gyms gave rise to a women’s rights campaign in newspapers and blogs, with the sarcastic slogan “Let her get fat!”

“As a nation we need to focus on preventative measures that include healthy lifestyle, specifically nutrition and fitness and early detection (of women’s illnesses),” said Princess Reema al-Saud, who is leading the climb to Everest base camp.

“The inspiration to climb Everest base camp came from the basic idea that a healthy lifestyle and healthy body can fight illness better,” she added.

JEDDAH UNITED

The lack of facilities for women is a significant barrier in a country where gender segregation is strictly enforced.

While girls’ state schools are barred from teaching physical education and consequently have no sports facilities, some private schools and private universities are very well equipped.

Jeddah United practices in one of the few courts available for women, surrounded by 5-meter (16-foot) concrete walls, which it rents for 7,000 to 10,000 riyals a month. Members get training and the opportunity to play three times a week for a monthly fee of 600 riyals.

“We believe that (Jeddah United) is a pressure group to promote a healthy lifestyle on a local level and on an international level,” said the team’s founder, Lina al-Maeena.

“We play a role of sport diplomacy by building bridges and breaking stereotypes of Saudi women. I hope that we are paving the way.”

Malhas, the equestrian who might yet be selected to represent the kingdom in London, trained in exclusively private facilities in Saudi Arabia.

She has already competed in international tournaments, which she travelled to by herself, financed not by the state but by her own family.

In the Singapore Youth Olympics in 2010 she stood on the podium to receive a bronze medal, although she was not officially delegated to represent the kingdom.

“I think women playing sports should ignore the criticisms they get from society,” Fitiany said.

“That is a kind of struggle, standing strong and not caring what people say.”

No. 1

Urbana Uni High

The former home of Illinois basketball before the opening of Huff Hall in the 1920s, Kenney Gym later housed the gymnastics and volleyball teams. It is named after former UI wrestler and wrestling coach Harold E. Kenney. Fans might remember the IHSA basketball finals being held at the Assembly Hall, but back in the ’20s, Kenney hosted the state tournament. The current home of the Illineks was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

No. 2

Champaign Central

Like Kenney Gym, Combes Gym is old, but that’s what makes it so great. One of the first things you notice is the reminders of the great Champaign High teams and athletes in all sports, dating back as far as the 1920s. The gym is named for former Central and Illini basketball coach Harry Combes. The floor is named after legendary coach Lee Cabutti. When a big-time opponent comes to visit, especially crosstown rival Centennial, the atmosphere is unmatched.

No. 3

Oakwood

It’s a true homecourt advantage for the home-standing Comets at The Pit. There is about a foot and a half of space in the out-of-bounds area, and the fans are right on top of you. If a player gets a full head of steam, say on a fast break, he or she better be under control because there’s a good chance they can run into the wall before coming to a stop. Oakwood knows the nuances; the opposition, not so much.

No. 4

Arcola

The aesthetics of the gym are similar to most in the area. There’s a lower section of seats and a balcony to accommodate larger crowds. It’s unique in the sense that it’s named after a coach who’s still active on the bench. Nancy Stiff Gym is named for the first and only girls’ basketball coach in school history, who also happens to be the Purple Riders’ athletic director. There are also a couple of large, detailed murals in the gym, recognizing the Arcola football state title teams from the ’70s and ’80s.

No. 5

Chrisman

The 2011-12 seasons for the boys’ and girls’ teams at Chrisman were lean, to say the least. But when those teams are at their peak, there isn’t a team around that wants to go to Edgar County to take on the Cardinals in front of their home fans. To say it gets loud in there is an understatement, and for a school known to produce some quality shooters, there’s nothing like the roar when a game-changing three-pointer goes through the net.

Best Approach To Hide Your Additional Home Key

I came home late one evening to discover that my house keys had fallen off of my key chain. I was troubled, not just because the keys were floating around someplace in the great unknown but also because I was stuck outside my house, in the dead of night.

I decided that I had to get and hold a spare near to the door in case that ever happened to me once again. I knew that I could not hide it in too obvious a place so I bought some stone diversion safes.

Diversion safes are essentially empty containers designed to resemble normal household items. They resemble anything from soda cans to books and are even weighted to feel full. When positioned correctly, they blend in with their environment.

It is a well-known fact that a robber will simply spend around 8 minutes inside somebody’s home. By making use of diversion safes to hide your valuable items in plain sight, you can turn the odds in your favor given that they won’t have time to check each and every container in your house.

Thieves these days know to check for a spare key beneath the welcome mat and along the doorframe. So, I placed a spare key within a stone-shaped safe instead and put it alongside the other stones which line the path to our front door.

Not one of my neighbors are aware that I keep a hidden safe within my front yard. I am very impressed by the concept that I also obtained a wall socket safe for valuable jewelry and placed it in the master bedroom inside our residence.

I also purchased a flowerpot safe to hold a disposable cell phone for emergency use. This one, I positioned in my front garden among the other plant pots which are already there.

Diversion safes are a unique way of keeping possessions safe by relying on stealth rather than strength. As for stone diversion safes, they are a great way of keeping a spare set of keys risk-free in case you get locked out of your home.

Quitting Smoking In A Less Hazardous Approach With Electronic Cigarettes
